From Mallorca hotels to Sa Calobra - Majorca

High stone walls, and almost dried out river and lots of tourists. That's Torrent de Pareis, a canyon close to the small village of Sa Calobra. It can be reached by a short walk along the sea and through pedestrian tunnels in the rock. After leaving the tunnel you are in the middle of a valley-like canyon. To the left is a small beach and to the right the gorge goes up into the mountains for several kilometers. During wintertime a river floats through the gorge, but during summer the creek is usually almost dry. My advise: leave the tourists behind and follow the gorge. It becomes really narrow and looks beautiful. But be careful each year hikers must be rescued after accidents deeper in the gorge. Falling rocks, wet and slippy stones might be hazards. You have to weight the risks. Beauty of nature vs. natural dangers... Well, most of the accidents happen on long hiking tours. It is relatively safe just to follow the gorge for a couple of hundred meters and have a little walk. Then you can find some Mallorca hotels there.

The road to Sa Calobra is gorgeous. It starts at the Calobra mountain pass at an elevation of about 800 meters and winds down until it reaches sea level after ten kilometers in the village of Sa Calobra. The road is narrow and continously descents while winding through numerous curves. The mountain landscape looks great. I had lots of fun driving this road.Directions: On the road from Lluc to Soller you should follow the sign to Sa Calobra and leave the main road. After two kilometers of gaining elevation, the mountain road starts going down again.

During summertime Sa Calobra is overfilled with tourists. Busses bring loads of tourists to this small place. Actually Sa Calobra is not even a real village. Basically it consists of a couple of restaurants, few postcard shops and ice cream vendors. Those buildings are located close to the road. From there you can take a short walk to the real attraction - and probably one of the most photographed tourist sites of Mallorca: the beach of Sa Calobra. Located in a small bay with high-rising cliffs, this beach attracts tourists because of its beautiful setting and clear, blue water. But you should not go there around noon or in the early afternoon. During that time the beach is overfilled. Better go there in the late afternoon when most of the tourists are already sitting in their busses back to their Mallorca hotels.
